Cloudflare Workers Tech Talks in Hokkaido #1
Cloudflare Workers Tech Talks in Hokkaido #1
I hosted “Workers Tech Talks in Hokkaido #1” on September 4. It was the first Workers Tech Talks held in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost region known for its beautiful nature and delicious food, particularly seafood and dairy products. About 32 people joined, creating a wonderful atmosphere. We had 5 main talks covering various aspects of Cloudflare Workers development. Everyone was engaged and listened attentively to the presentation!
What is Cloudflare Workers Tech Talks?
Cloudflare Workers Tech Talks is an event where developers who are developing using Cloudflare Workers talk about Cloudflare Workers. It has been held multiple times in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Niigata. The feature of this event is that the speakers are free to talk about whatever they want. I often tell the speakers, “Please don’t give introductions like ‘What is Cloudflare Workers?’“. I ask them to talk about whatever they want to talk about.

32 people joined on the event day. Despite being the first Workers Tech Talks in Hokkaido, we had great attendance and the participants were very enthusiastic about Cloudflare Workers.
Timetable
Here is the timetable.
Talks
Five speakers gave main talks covering a wide range of topics from CMS development with Workers to AI chatbots. The diversity of use cases showcased the versatility of Cloudflare Workers.
Building CMS with Full Use of Workers
ねこや, a software engineer at ReMotive LLC. and MIERUNE Inc., talked about creating a CMS using Cloudflare Workers extensively. It was particularly impressive when he demonstrated with code examples how Cloudflare Images Bindings allows you to create a Workers app that resizes images in just a few lines of code, complete with a live demo.
Experience with Cloudflare Containers and Contemplating Use Cases
Kanahiro Iguchi, a Geospatial Specialist based in Hokkaido, presented about the experience of using Cloudflare Containers and exploring potential use cases. The Cloudflare Containers demo was particularly impressive, showing a map tile server running inside a container that generated images using Sharp for image processing.

Creating Fast Web Frameworks
Yusuke Wada (me), talked about how to make applications built with Web standards faster. I introduced methods for measuring speed and demonstrated Web standards API optimizations, such as minimizing instantiation of new Response
and new Headers
, which leads to significant speed improvements.

Easy AI Chatbot Implementation with Agents SDK
syumai, a web application developer who wrote a series about Cloudflare Workers for Software Design magazine, explained Cloudflare’s Agents SDK and demonstrated creating a chatbot. He also covered the AIChatAgent
class and shared his thoughts on how to use it in future projects.

Greetings from Mountain Climbing Devices with Email Workers
halka presented about using GARMIN mountain climbing devices with Email Workers to post to SNS from the devices. He brought the actual device and attempted a live demo, though the Iridium signal couldn’t reach inside the building so the demo didn’t work as planned. However, he had successfully tested it beforehand and managed to post to X from the device.

Networking
After the talks, we had a social gathering at a local izakaya (Japanese pub) with the amusing name “炎 (Hono)” - coincidentally sharing the same name as my web framework! The attendance rate for the networking session was excellent, with most participants joining us. Everyone did self-introductions and had great conversations, creating wonderful connections among the attendees.
Summary
This was the very first Workers Tech Talks in Hokkaido, and it was a great success! With 32 participants, we had one of the largest turnouts for a Workers Tech Talks event outside of Tokyo, suggesting even greater potential for future events. Hokkaido has a vibrant tech community with many web and IT professionals, including people who come from outside the region. This presents an excellent opportunity to spread Cloudflare adoption further. The atmosphere throughout the day was warm and friendly, making it a truly enjoyable experience for everyone. We’re already considering hosting the next Hokkaido event in January next year!
Here’s our group photo - everyone is smiling!
